FACT OF BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY IN SABAH
Sabah is experiencing exponential growth in development under the 9th Malaysia Plan and beyond. The allocation for 9th Malaysia Plan amounts to RM25.35 billion, with a total of 4436 projects for development works.
The construction industry could be described as a substantial economic driver for Malaysia. In 2011, the construction-related cluster expanded by 14.7% (2010:18.9%) and was a major contributor to the growth of the domestic-orientated industries.
The Malaysian construction industry is generally separated into two areas. One area is general construction, which comprises residential construction, non-residential construction and civil engineering construction. The second area is special trade works, which comprises activities of metal works, electrical works, plumbing, sewerage and sanitary work, refrigeration and air conditioning works, painting works, carpentry, tiling and flooring works and glass works.
Rapid population growth is driving the Sabah Government to create more vital facilities such as housing, hospitals and medical centers, schools and universities. Evolution in the sectors of commerce, money and business is also leading to the creation of more offices, shopping malls, hotels and other tourist and
service-oriented facilities. The demand for building construction materials and machinery has witnessed a precipitous rise.
